Un impianto micro-idrico a ruota idraulica è caratterizzato da potenze inferiori ai 100kW ed è basato sul principio di trasformazione dell'energia cinetica dell'acqua, che scorre lungo un qualsiasi corso d'acqua, in energia meccanica per mezzo della ruota idraulica che produce un moto rotatorio. L'energia meccanica della ruota viene utilizzata per produrre energia elettrica, accoppiando alla ruota un generatore di opportuna potenza.
